The exact origins of the Sheffield Fems are shrouded in the mists of time. Suffice it to say that we have been around in various forms for several years, and have ties to The F-Word in the form of their blog contributor and our co-founder, Laura Woodhouse. We are a group of feminists, who meet every week to campaign, hold discussions and provide a friendly space to raise issues that we feel strongly about.
The history of the Fems is coloured by our activism. Our first high profile campaign was successful in getting Playboy merchandise withdrawn from John Lewis, and was reported in The Guardian in 2007.
Since then, we have run campaigns focussing on sex trafficking, Hooters, equal pay and abortion rights, to name but a few.
Whilst for our campaigns, the Fems adopt a general group policy, the same is not true of our discussions. We are open to all viewpoints, as we feel it is important to debate controversial issues. Individual members are always free to participate in or sit out of any activity as they see fit. Similarly, since our programme is determined by group decision, anybody is welcome to raise new issues for discussions or campaigns at any time.
Our current programme of events can be found here.
